2024 FALL

Situated along the Erie Canal next to a ruined stone wall in Little Falls, the proposal is a housing complex integrated with a communal dark room and exhibition gallery. The program draws a parallel between the sequential process of analog film development and the continuous flow of the canal beneath the site.

The darkroom and galley are conceived as meditative spaces, where access to views and sounds is deliberately controlled. Openings are minimal to emphasize the presence of the canal while blocking the light for the structure to function as a darkroom.

The housing units adopt a similar spatial strategy. Sloping roofs and narrow slit openings frame limited views of the canal, filling the interior space with sound while encouraging occupants to step outside and engage directly with the site.

The project was a response to the fast-paced tourism and contemporary lifestyle by proposing a more intentional mode of inhabitation. Through curated spatial sequences, the architecture invites personal reflection and engagement with the historical landscape of the Erie Canal.
